Cahokia Mounds National Historic Site is an ancient Native American City. The Spinach Can Collectibles Museum in Chester is chock-full of Popeye the Sailor Man memorabilia, some dating back almost 100 years. The Wabash County Museum in Mt. Carmel features an exhibit dedicated to Bruce Beemer, the voice actor from the original Lone Ranger radio program, as well as exhibits showcasing some of the earliest auto dealerships in the country, and the way the oil boom affected southern Illinois. The Historic National Road Interpretive Center in Vandalia features models of wagons, 1830’s era timber from the original road, interactive features and more. Over in Cumberland County there is a train depot that has been serving its community for almost 150 years. The Greenup Train Depot is located right on the Historic National Road. It has served many railroads over the years and is brimming with model trains, static displays, antiques and railroading history. The Edwardsville Children’s Museum offers fun activities and exhibits for kids from ages 1 – 10 including Star City, a kid-sized community with a market, cafe, hospital, post office, bank, library, fire department and police department.
