Sam Parr State Fish and Wildlife Area Get one with nature with Illinois Wildlife Connections. This 4,000-acre facility allows hunters to lodge comfortably year round while setting out to hunt for deer and turkey. If you want more recreational opportunities you can check out the Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area or Sam Parr State Fish and Wildlife Area. These areas offer 22 miles and 840 acres, respectively, of hiking, horse trails, bike trails, and fishing. If you want to catch a glimpse of rare grassland wildlife and enjoy birdwatching, you will want to make sure you stop by Prairie Ridge State Natural Area.

Playground at Peterson Park If you are looking for something to do with the family you can bring them to Peterson Park where they can enjoy the aquatic center, batting cages, mini golf, and a playground. You can also teach a little history and show the kids what the past was like at the Sainte Marie Foundation Museum. This museum has artifacts from the villages history as well as a wedding bedroom, special programs, and antiques. End the day by catching a movie at the Drive’NTheatre.

Before you leave, make sure to stop into Arndt’s Fudgery Gift Shop to sample some fudge and grab some for the drive home!

All of this exploring is sure to make you hungry. For lunch, you have to stop by Solid Grounds Coffee House. They are only open Wednesday through Saturday 6 am to 2 pm and serve up a lot more than just coffee. Step up to the counter to order an Amore or a Loaded Ark and finish it off with a frozen frappe or smoothie.

For dinner make sure you stop by Joe’s Italian Foods and Pizza for authentic Italian cuisine. We recommend the Cannelloni or the Sicilian Pizza. They are closed on Mondays, but you can stop in for dinner every other night or even for lunch every day but Monday and Saturday. End the day with an ice cream cone, malt, or Boston Shake from The Freeze. For a full list of all the restaurants in Jasper County, please click here.
