The McKendree MetroRecPlex is a new, full-service, state-of-the-art sports complex. The complex offers two NHL-sized ice rinks, an aquatic center fit with a 10 lane championship swimming pool, a contemporary fitness area and many other amenities. Memberships and daily passes can be purchased for use of the facility and all its features.

Favorite son, William Jennings Bryan, who ran for President three times, served in the U.S. House of Representatives and was Secretary of State for Woodrow Wilson was born in Salem. He is particularly well-known for his prosecution of John T. Scopes for teaching about human evolution in a state sponsored school. Clarence Darrow defended Scopes at the trial. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100, but the verdict was overturned on a technicality. You can drive by Bryan’s birthplace, a house his father built, at 408 S. Broadway in Salem. More information and items like his typewriter and other artifacts are in the Museum, which is open by appointment only.
Plan your next meeting, reunion, wedding or other event in this transformed old abandoned barn which is now a charming and rustic venue on four beautiful acres. The barn holds up to 200 guests, or more if the dance floor is eliminated. There is also a small white country home with several rooms available for smaller groups. Also featured is a large outdoor shaded seating area to enjoy when the weather is right.
