The McKendree MetroRecPlex is a new, full-service, state-of-the-art sports complex. The complex offers two NHL-sized ice rinks, an aquatic center fit with a 10 lane championship swimming pool, a contemporary fitness area and many other amenities. Memberships and daily passes can be purchased for use of the facility and all its features.

Favorite son, William Jennings Bryan, who ran for President three times, served in the U.S. House of Representatives and was Secretary of State for Woodrow Wilson was born in Salem. He is particularly well-known for his prosecution of John T. Scopes for teaching about human evolution in a state sponsored school. Clarence Darrow defended Scopes at the trial. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100, but the verdict was overturned on a technicality. You can drive by Bryan’s birthplace, a house his father built, at 408 S. Broadway in Salem. More information and items like his typewriter and other artifacts are in the Museum, which is open by appointment only.
Open for fall family activities at the pumpkin patch, Sept. 30-Oct. 29. Day activities are every Sat. 12-5 and Sun. 1-5. The activities include a choo choo train, inflatable, 20 foot slide, gold mine, corn box, gourd slingshot, small fence maze, hayride, hay maze, corn maze,hillbilly golf, obstacle course, and several small additional activities. All activities are inclusive for the $8 admission. Additional purchases might be refreshments at the concession stand, pumpkins, gourds, and straw. U-pick available. The barn holds up to 200 guests, or more if the dance floor is eliminated. There is also a small white country home with several rooms available for smaller groups.
