William Jennings Bryan Museum
Favorite son, William Jennings Bryan, who ran for President three times, served in the U.S. House of Representatives and was Secretary of State for Woodrow Wilson was born in Salem. He is particularly well-known for his prosecution of John T. Scopes for teaching about human evolution in a state sponsored school. Clarence Darrow defended Scopes at the trial. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100, but the verdict was overturned on a technicality. You can drive by Bryan’s birthplace, a house his father built, at 408 S. Broadway in Salem. More information and items like his typewriter and other artifacts are in the Museum, which is open by appointment only.

Best known for the annual Balloon Fest, there are also walking trails, nature areas, 36-hole disc golf course and gathering places. This 235-acre park also hosts the annual Festival of Lights each December.
45 acres of recreation space include a swimming pool, baseball and softball fields, skateboard park, several picnic shelters and a variety of playground equipment. The centerpiece of the park is an old locomotive from the early railroad days.
