Discover the history of how Germans came to have such a preeminent influence in the Gateway City! Presented by Jim Merkel, a descendant of Germans who came to St. Louis in the 1850’s and the author of four books on St. Louis. Merkel will explain the history of German settlement in  the St. Louis area, as well as how they kept Missouri in the Union, and how anti-German sentiment during World War I damaged their community.

In a presentation full of stories and pictures, Merkel will discuss the mayors, baseball team owners, authors and others who descended from German immigrants to St. Louis.
