Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition

October 13, 2018 - November 24, 2018
Chester Public Library
733 State Street
618-826-3711

The Illinois tour of Crossroads: Change in Rural America, a new Museum on Main Street exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution and Illinois Humanities, will begin Where Illinois Began. Chester Public Library will host Crossroads from September 8 to October 20, 2018.

Museum on Main Street is a program conducted cooperatively by the Smithsonian and state humanities councils nationwide to give rural Americans opportunities to experience world-class exhibitions in their own communities.

Chester is the seat of Randolph County, where the original state capital, Kaskaskia, was located. Coinciding with the Illinois Bicentennial, the statewide tour of Crossroads will recognize the importance of rural communities throughout the state’s history, making Chester an especially appropriate place to initiate the tour.

The Crossroads exhibit was co-curated by Dr. Debra Reid. Dr. Reid was raised in Rockwood, Illinois and attended Chester schools. She currently works at The Henry Ford Museum in Michigan as Curator of Agriculture and the Environment. She will present the opening program of the exhibit September 12 at the Chester Library.

In addition to the traveling Smithsonian exhibit, there will also be a local companion exhibit created by library staff and volunteers. The local exhibit will feature Illinois’ first capital – Kaskaskia, the Mississippi River, local farms to factories, and the future. Historical artifacts, maps, photos, video interviews and age appropriate activities for school age children will be included in the Chester Public Library companion exhibit. Special programs related to Crossroads will be presented during the six-week exhibition.

The Chester Public Library is proud to host this new exhibition which should be fascinating to people throughout the region. More information and exact exhibit hours are available at www.chesterpubliclibrary.com. Group tours and school tours are welcome.
