Visit the Governor Bond State Memorial, which marks the burial site of the first Governor of Illinois, Shadrach Bond. U.S. Senator Elias Kent Kane, Illinois’ first Secretary of State and architect of the state constitution is also buried here. And, erected in 1883, the obelisk monument is a historical item in and of itself.
During Bond’s tenure, he chartered the State Bank of Illinois and moved the capital from Kaskaskia, IL to Vandalia.
